About our organization:

The Civic Health and Institutions Project, hosted at Northeastern University, seeks to understand and improve the information-media environment and support key practitioners by serving as a platform for data resources and data engineering. We have developed the capacity for conducting low-cost, large-scale surveys, based on our experiences with our COVID States Project/Chip50, which has, since April 2020, surveyed around 25,000 Americans, across all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, approximately every 6-8 weeks.

How we can help you cover the 2024 elections:

We plan to conduct two waves of surveys during the summer/fall of 2024, supported in part by the National Science Foundation. Working with 10 additional newsrooms as part of the Knight Election Hub, we would determine: (1) what are broad policy questions relevant to the election that all/most of the newsrooms would be interested in; and (2) what are policy questions relevant to the election distinctive to their state.

Before each of the two surveys, we would work with participating newsrooms to translate their questions regarding public opinion into survey questions. We will produce one long report regarding the policy issues of general interest (where we would have state-specific numbers, but also numbers for every state and Washington, DC); plus short reports summarizing our findings.

Our focus will be to use these surveys to produce information about the issues important to local audiences, and to put those local numbers into a national context. This project will provide high-quality, empirical data to newsrooms, giving them unique and valuable content that is in demand from decision-makers.

What you should know: This resource is limited to 10 newsrooms. Anyone can apply, but we’ll give priority to newsrooms that serve underserved communities as well as newsrooms in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
